Ladies In Waiting

Shopping for the girls can be a blast! Check out our tips and hot picks for cool dresses on the following pages.

We all have a bridesmaid dress horror story. It wasn’t so long ago that the call to be an attendant was accompanied by visions of ghastly gowns that would never again see the light of day.

Today, with more choices and fewer constraints, shopping for bridesmaid dresses is painless. Ask each woman in advance what styles she thinks will complement her shape and inquire about her budget. Consider what each bridesmaid will be comfortable wearing. When in doubt, ask the salesperson and remember that A-line dresses work well for many women of different body types. They’re also terrific for flowergirls.
A popular option is to pick a designer and a color and let your bridesmaids choose their own dresses. That way, each will be able to choose the style that suits her figure and personality best. Be sure to select like fabrics to complement your bridal gown. For example, a duchesse satin gown would work better with silk dresses than with lace.

Don’t bring all your attendants with you; chances are they’ll never agree on one color or dress. Instead bring your maid of honor or a relative, make a day of it and, above all, have fun!
