How to choose
your wedding party
You've set the date. Now who are you going to include in your wedding party? Your attendants can be a great help in preparing for your wedding and especially a great support group on the day of your wedding itself.
Inviting someone to be in your wedding party is an honor. Therefore, what's most relevant is that the people you choose are important to both of you.
Here are few guidelines to consider when choosing the members of your wedding party:
- Decide how many attendants you want. Generally, the more formal the wedding, the more attendants. The range is anywhere from one to twelve, with most weddings having six or fewer. The number of ushers or groomsmen is usually determined by the number of guests. One usher can comfortably seat about 50 guests. It's not necessary to have the same number of groomsmen and bridesmaids although it is a common practice.
- Verify their availabilities. As soon as you start planning, preferably after you set the date and decide on the number of guests, make sure the members of your wedding party are able to attend.
- Consider their financial responsibilities. Attendants usually purchase their own attire, and pay for their own transportation and lodging, plus a wedding gift.
- Consider your financial responsibilities. The more attendants, the greater your cost since each needs a bouquet, corsage or boutonniere as well as a gift.
- Consider the abilities of the flower girl or ring or train bearer. Children who are too young have been known to create challenges during the ceremony. They can be absolutely adorable, but beware of the other side of the coin.
Your Wedding Attendants
Maid of Honor
Someone who has given you strength during the rough times, and will be sure to hold up for you before and during your wedding.
Best Man
Someone who is close to the groom and is comfortable with giving a speech at the reception.
Bridesmaids and Groomsmen
Your "social" friends or relatives. Look to these people to support you during the planning, and help to mingle with others at the reception.
Flower Girl and Ring Bearer
Children you are very close to. Make sure they are comfortable with you-and with an audience.
